Next Generation PON Technology

Track: Engineering

Session Number: 1133
Date: Mon, Dec 14th, 2020
Time: 12:15 PM - 1:00 PM

Description:

Today’s FTTH networks are under tremendous strain as 4K and 360º video, AR/VR, high-bandwidth enterprise applications and mobile backhaul are set to consume capacity.. At the same time, service providers are rolling out Gigabit services leveraging xPON, Gfast, DOCSIS 3.1 and even fixed wireless broadband, requiring higher speeds and new optical wavelengths in both the upstream and downstream. Technicians turning up next generation PON services must ensure they are connecting to the right service. And service providers must identify the next gen access strategies needed to ensure their competitive position today as well as provide a path to networks of the future.

This presentation will outline next generation 10 Gigabit Passive Optical Network (10G PON) architectures, including XGS-PON and NG-PON2. Here we will discuss:
- New architectures, such as cascaded and unbalanced splits, along with the challenges and opportunities they pose..
- Highlight next gen PON use cases, such as fiber broadband providers in the UK, and a rural local exchange carrier fiber operators.
-Outline key market drivers, and PON technology evolutions, which are key to building networks of today and tomorrow.
